Hike to Primrose Overlook, on the Alpine Loop near Sundance.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version="4.22.2" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"]

This moderate hike is just off one of my all time favorite roads, the Alpine Loop.   The hike itself is on the Sundance side, but I'm almost always coming from the Lehi/Utah County side.  Fire up your Google or Apple Maps, and find Timpanogas Cave National Monument.   Follow that road east until it turns into a really narrow one-lane bit of pavement.   Be very careful, there are a LOT of folks on bicycles and motorbikes up there, and most of the corners are fairly blind.

Look for the "Summit Trailhead" near the top.  It's kinda hard to tell where the actual summit is, but the trailhead is right around there, if you're coming from Lehi, it's on the right-hand side.   If you get to the two-lane road heading to Crystal Springs, you just passed it.  Turn around!

Once you're parked, the trail takes you into the aspen grove headed toward Timpanogas itself.   The first half mile or so is pretty mild, steady uphill.    Eventually you'll get to the first asskicker, where it gets steep for what feels like forever but is really only like 500 feet.   Don't worry, there's a pair of nice meadows just beyond, and you can catch your breath.... before the next asskicker.   The second one is a doozy, but there are plenty of logs to pop a squat on and catch your breath.   The views the entire time are amazing, so if you're in decent shape you might not even notice the climb.

When you think you're about gassed, things mellow out and you can look east and see the Heber Valley off in the distance.  Might even catch a bit of Deer Creek Reservoir.  You're almost there!    Just a bit up ahead, you'll round a corner and holy crap, there is the back side of Timpanogas in all its glory.  And it is BEAUTIFUL.     Walk a little bit further to where the trail ends and you've got some amazing views, and a good spot to just chill for half an hour or so, soaking up the scenery.   If you're there late in the summer and the leaves are changing, you're in for a treat!

Once you finally decide to start heading back, it's not too bad.   In the first meadow, you will see a smaller path going off to the right.  If you go down that way, it will loop back around to the parking log.   Just before the tree line you'll find a drinking trough for horses.    The water coming out of the spout is most likely coming from a deep spring, but I had plenty with me so I didn't take a sip.   The trough is obviously a trough so don't drink out of that unless you enjoy giardia, and if you don't know what that's like, imagine Taco Bell and Chipotle memes.    There are a couple places where going back down this alternate route get a little steep, but it's not too bad.  It's a nice change to the way in, as there are a lot of ferns and other awesome ground cover to check out.    When you get to the signposts, just keep going left.  You'll be back in the parking lot in no time.

Catch your breath, then go finish driving the Loop.   If you keep going the direction you started, you'll come to Sundance, and then the Provo Canyon.
